Mugello day 2: Ferrari flies

Rubens Barrichello set the fastest time in his F2003-GA in testing at the Mugello circuit in Italy today (Wednesday), as the Italian team continue to work on the reliability of its new car

Test driver Luca Badoer, also driving a 2003 Ferrari, set the second fastest time of the day, with McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen third, albeit over a second slower than Barrichello.

Barrichello was driving the car that Felipe Massa ran at Fiorano yesterday. He completed 150km in the morning session, to put extra mileage on the engine, which Massa ran for 250km yesterday. "We are doing some reliability checks on the new car," Barrichello told autosport.com. "We have to make sure the engine, gearbox and all the other components can do the mileage. That's all we are doing today."

Olivier Panis was fourth fastest for Toyota, the Frenchman working on set-up and tyre development ahead of an aerodynamic test tomorrow. Fifth fastest was Panis' team-mate Cristiano da Matta, who concentrated on learning the track in his first run at Mugello in an F1 car.

Jaguar became the first team to take part in the Friday test sessions to use one of its allocated test days, with Mark Webber setting the sixth fastest time. "The car does have potential and we are making progress, but so far we haven't been able to materialise it in the race," the Australian told autosport.com. "We're getting there and I have become more and more comfortable with the car."

Heinz-Harald Frentzen only completed 19 laps after suffering a massive engine problem in the morning. He suffered another mechanical problem in the afternoon session, with required the mechanics to take the floor off the car to investigate.

The BAR pair of Jacques Villeneuve and Jenson Button conducted tyre testing, although the Englishman's running was hampered by gearbox troubles. Pedro de la Rosa was also in action for McLaren, the Spaniard a last minute stand-in for the ill Alex Wurz.
