Montoya Calls for Former Drivers to Judge Incidents

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya has called for the FIA to use former drivers to judge racing incidents in Formula One Grands Prix.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya has called for the FIA to use former drivers to judge racing incidents in Formula One Grands Prix.

"I think the time has come for the FIA to put someone with previous racing experience up in race control to be able to judge on incidents like these," Montoya said in a column on Autosport magazine.

"He needs to be someone who is brave enough to punish every driver the same - no matter who they are or which team they drive for. And the punishments need to be handed out equally to all drivers for similar mistakes so there is some consistency in what happens."

The Williams driver has been involved in two incidents with World Champion Michael Schumacher in the last races in Malaysia and Brazil. Montoya was penalised at Sepang for what the race stewards considered an "avoidable accident" with Schumacher, and the pair clashed again at Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Colombian, who at Interlagos lost his front wing in the incident and eventually finished in fifth position, was clearly upset after the race, claiming that Schumacher was an unfair driver.

However, despite the penalty in Malaysia and the incident in Brazil, Montoya said he will only change his driving style in order to match Schumacher's.

"The only thing that will probably change is how I go wheel to wheel with Michael," he added. "I thought after the first corner in Brazil that we were going to have a fair fight, but it is obvious from what he did to me that we can't.

"If Michael is allowed to race the way we saw in Brazil then I will race in the same way from now on. I only like to race fair with people who race fair as well."
