Minardi signs Bruni in test role

Minardi has signed Gianmaria Bruni as its official test and reserve driver for the remainder of 2003. The Italian will participate in the Friday morning test sessions from the German Grand Prix on August 1

A race winner in British Formula 3 in 2001, Bruni is currently second in the Euro F3000 series. As well as his Friday duties on grand prix weekends, he will also take part in the Monza F1 test from September 2-4. A group of Italian investors have funded his inclusion in the Faenza-based squad.

"Naturally enough, this group of investors spoke with several teams concerning their proposed project," said team principal Paul Stoddart. "In the end, however, we're pleased to say they chose Minardi because of the natural fit between the team and their objective. Initial discussions took place over a year ago with Gian Carlo Minardi, who is heavily involved with formulating our young driver development strategy, and we have now had the chance to make our choice.

"Gimmy, as he likes to be called, has been a winner in Italian and European-level motor racing championships and is clearly a very talented driver who is ready to make the final step to F1. I'm sure he is going to be a great addition to the team."
