Melbourne street demo closer
A street demonstration spectacular through the streets of Melbourne ahead of this year's season opener has moved closer this week after the Australian city's council agreed to underwrite some of the costs for the event
Plans for the event surfaced late last year but were dependent on some of the £130,000 cost of the event being met by the Melbourne City Council - who would benefit from the media and public interest as the city celebrates its 10th hosting of the Formula 1 race.
After meeting to discuss the matter before Christmas, the council has now confirmed that it will contribute £50,000 towards the event - providing that its pledge is at least equalled by corporate sponsorship. The Grand Prix Corporation, which organises the Australian Grand Prix, will pay the remainder of the costs.
Australian Grand Prix boss Ron Walker said he was confident that the full funding for the event would be found - ensuring plans for at least five F1 cars to drive through the downtown area of Melbourne.
"I'm sure we will be able to fulfil sponsorship in partnership with the Melbourne City Council," he said.
