McLaren: We've got more work to do

McLaren managing director Martin Whitmarsh says his team is under no illusions about its chances in this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix, despite David Coulthard's success in the Melbourne Formula 1 season opener

Speaking ahead of this weekend's second round in Sepang, Whitmarsh says Melbourne was an indicator of progress with the interim MP4-17D chassis rather than a significant turning point of its world championship fortunes.

"Although we have taken a major step forwards, we are under no illusions," said Whitmarsh. "There is still significant work to be done to ensure we continue to raise the competitiveness of the MP4-17D, in conjunction with the development process of the MP4-18, and improve our application to the new qualifying format.

"Team McLaren Mercedes' performance at the Australian Grand Prix was an illustration that we have made good progress with our entire package during the off-season. It was also a motivational way to begin the new campaign," he added.

The new McLaren could test as early as next week, but is not likely to be introduced to racing until the Spanish Grand Prix in May.
