Massa laments engine problems

Massa felt something was wrong with his V8 power unit during the second practice session and, after analysis of the engine by the team, it was decided that it would need to be changed.

With Ferrari locked in a tight fight with Renault in the constructors' championship, and Massa trying to help out Michael Schumacher's ambitions in the drivers' championship, the ten-place penalty is a blow.

"When I stopped the car I felt a different noise in the engine," said Massa about what happened. "We are checking inside the engine at the moment but we are definitely going to have to change.

"That really is not very good news, especially when you see the car is competitive. Straightaway I managed to make a good laptime and with the car I think we have the right package and the right tyres for the race.

"Starting ten places back is not really fantastic, but we will try and be motivated to do a great race."

Despite the penalty, Massa felt that his best chance would be a top five finish - and he was well aware that it leaves teammate Schumacher having to fight Renault's Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella alone at the front.

"It is bad luck to have to change the engine, but in a way at this track it is possible to pass," he said. "You can also play a bit with strategies here as well, so I think we will be able to do a good race and maybe a top five finish is possible."

Despite the engine change blow, Ferrari appeared to have the edge judging by the opening practice times - with Massa and Schumacher faster than both Renaults.

"For sure Renault will be competitive, but I think we are really competitive as well. We have a very good car and maybe we are a little bit better," added Massa.

"But starting at the back things change and now I need to focus on my race and pass as many cars as I can."
