Massa in no rush to sort Ferrari contract

Felipe Massa says he is in no hurry to sort his contract situation with Ferrari, insisting he is focusing on the championship

The Brazilian's current deal ends at the end of this season, and there have been rumours that Ferrari is interested in signing Renault's Robert Kubica to partner Fernando Alonso from next year.

But Massa says he is very calm about the situation, and prefers to focus on the racing for the time being.

"I think there's no rush at the moment, even from my point of view," Massa said when asked by AUTOSPORT about his future.

"I'm very happy with my condition and the way we are working together inside the team. Even before my accident last year some talks started to renew the contract.

"I can say that the talks will start again. I'm in no rush to do that. I want to improve, and to better race by race and to fight for the championship. That's what clearer in my mind, and there is no rush for the contract at the moment."

Massa is leading the championship after the first three races of the season, despite not having won yet this year.

The Ferrari driver said it was impossible to tell if he will be able to fight for victory this weekend.

"I think it's pretty impossible to say that now," he said. "I think we need to wait and do some running. We saw a good McLaren in Malaysia, a very good Red Bull, but if you analyse the details, especially in the race, we had a great car as well.

"So we just need to wait and see on this track. But I still trust that we can do a good job."

And the Brazilian insisted it is too early to rule out current champion Mercedes GP from the title fight, despite a slower-than-expected start to the season by the German squad.

"As everybody says, I don't know if it's true or not, maybe in Barcelona they will have half a new car," he added.

"We always need to take Mercedes as a good team. They won the championship last year. Not under the Mercedes name, but they won the championship, so it's a team that can be able to make a good car and that's something we always analyse.

"All these three teams like good competition, like the possibility to win races and fight for the championship, so that's why you don't look differently at Red Bull, McLaren or Mercedes. These three teams are good competitors."
