Klien looking for upturn

Jaguar driver Christian Klien believes that next weekend's inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix will be the first this season where he has not been at a disadvantage, and is aiming to capitalise with his best result of the year so far

The 21-year old Austrian reckons he has been on the back foot at both races so far, in Australia and Malaysia, because he has not seen the tracks before, unlike the majority of the field. He finished 11th in Melbourne, and 10th in Sepang last weekend.

"Two races, and two finishes, this is what I was aiming for so I am really pleased with my progress and that of the team," said Klien. "Looking ahead, my third race is going to be good fun as this will be the first time that it is really an even playing field for us from a driver's point of view.

"None of us have raced there so I am going to give it my all and see what happens. The track is likely to be quite dusty but until we get out on track on Friday, we won't really know how things are going to progress. Although the engineers have been preparing as best they can, there is no substitute for the real thing."

Jaguar has been investigating the poor starts which both of its drivers suffered at the Malaysian Grand Prix, and test driver Bjorn Wirdheim has been at UK drag racing track Santa Pod today (Friday) to work specifically on the starting process.

Klien's team-mate Mark Webber has failed to finish either race so far this year thanks to technical problems, but he is confident that the team will have made enough progress by next weekend.

Webber said: "Progress at this level does not happen overnight, but we are starting to see the rewards of our winter testing programme and although we are still learning, we are so far ahead versus where we were last year. I am confident that the team will take steps forward between now and Bahrain and our goal for the weekend will be to be competitive and to highlight the continuous improvement of the R5."
