Jarno Trulli Q&A
Jarno Trulli heads to the renamed Renault team next year, in what is effectively a swap with countryman and rival Giancarlo Fisichella. Back in 1986 Jarno's F3 season back was subsidised by Benetton, and he's been under a long-term obligation to drive for the team one day. It remains to be seen whether he's got his timing right, or which of the Italian aces has got the better of the deal. Benetton might have struggled this year, but clearly there is potential for the team to become a major force once again. Jarno has become increasingly frustrated this year at Jordan. He's been the only driver to regularly break into the Ferrari, McLaren and Williams group in qualifying, but races results have not been great. Adam Cooper spoke to Trulli as he prepared for the Belgian GP
"Yes of course, I'm really excited and motivated. I think they've got good potential and I hope we will develop this next season. It's a great project, a big team, and they already won two championships in the past as Benetton. Renault has also won many championships in the past, and they are back again to win."
"Well, I think it came at the right moment, when Renault is back and they want to come back to win races and championships. So I think it's the right time to go back home to Benetton. But it's going to be completely different, engine, the chassis, the team and the tyres. So it will be very tough for me."
"Yes, I'm pretty sure. They came back into F1 this year with a new project, which for sure was very difficult for the first season. But they went for a new direction, with a new technology, which in the future many people will follow. That's the reason why they've been struggling a little bit. But from what I've seen is that the team has improved through the season. You can't say at the moment they are competitive, but from what I've seen they can be competitive next year."
"You can have accidents with anyone, because we are 22 drivers and we are all fighting for the championship and the races, so this can happen. I don't have any special feeling against him. We've talked to each other many times, so it will be nice to have two young and motivated drivers."
"Unfortunately our car hasn't been as competitive in the races as it was in qualifying. This was our biggest problem. What more can I say? It's not been very reliable. But anyway, I've had two great seasons with Jordan, and I would describe them as very positive."
"Quite a lot, and I would say I would do it again, anyway. It was a good experience, a great atmosphere inside the team. It's a bit sad anyhow to leave this team as I really felt at home, as a member of the family. But this is life, and this is motorsport. I've a lot of friends here, but I will see them a lot in the paddock!"
"I think so, especially in the early future. I'm sure there will be a great step forward next season."
