Head: Williams can win races in 2003
BMW WilliamsF1 Team technical director Patrick Head believes that his team's new FW25 will be able to challenge for regular grand prix wins in 2003, despite only showing glimpses of form in the first three races of the season
Williams ran the FW25 in its full specification at a race for the first time in Brazil, including a new gearbox and rear-suspension layout, having used an interim chassis in Australia and Malaysia. But because of the mixed weather conditions at Interlagos, it was impossible to gauge the performance of the car to its closest rivals Ferrari and McLaren.
"By Imola and certainly Barcelona last year I pretty much knew, although you don't give it away in this business, that we didn't have the basis of a car to develop that would compete throughout the year," Head said. "Maybe I'm deluding myself, but I think we do have the basis of a car we can develop now, and that it can become more competitive."
Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya confirmed that the full-spec version of the FW25 was indeed an improvement in Brazil: "It's a lot better in high-speed corners, although there's not much high speed stuff here. It's more stable and precise through the corners."
