Head talks down Williams' Monza chances
Williams technical director Patrick Head thinks that despite Monza being the fastest circuit on the Grand Prix calendar, a repeat of Juan Pablo Montoya's 2001 victory is unlikely
"The higher speed circuits have suited us well in the past," admitted Head. "Different types of car layout optimise their performance towards one end of the downforce scale or the other. Obviously though, at the moment one tends to optimise towards the higher downforce end of the scale because that's the way the majority of the circuits are. Saying that, over the last few years we've generally been more competitive at Hockenheim and Monza - the low downforce places - than elsewhere.
"But whereas last year Ferrari had very definite weaknesses, they have done a very good job of attending to those and I don't think the Ferrari has types of circuit at which they are weak anymore. The technical gap between the Ferrari this year and our package is big, and I don't see any reason why it should suddenly be reversed," he added.
Head's comments followed on from those of Juan Pablo Montoya, who suggested that if Williams was in with a decent chance of beating Ferrari anywhere, it was at Monza.
