Head argues for grooved tyre rethink

Williams technical director Patrick Head has said that Formula 1 needs a major rethink about grooved tyres if its cars are going to once again look spectacular, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine

Head claimed that the removal of traction control from this year's British Grand Prix onward will not go far enough in improving the show. He believes that a new tyre philosophy is necessary to achieve this.

"We've got tyres at the back that are hardly bigger than those at the front - and with more than 850bhp, if you get the car slightly out of line then you destroy those rear tyres and it is like driving on ice," Head told AUTOSPORT.

"So, if you want dramatic racing then you need different tyres. You probably need regulations that cause you to have much smaller fronts and bigger rears, which will in turn move the weight to the rear again."
