Hamilton eager to start first full test

Lewis Hamilton has said he cannot wait to get his proper testing programme under way with McLaren tomorrow, after a frustrating day on the sidelines at Silverstone

The GP2 champion had been due to begin his first full Formula One testing programme today, but damp track conditions this morning and the late arrival of Mercedes-Benz engines forced the team to delay their running for 24 hours.

Hamilton was only able to complete a handful of installation laps instead, with the team keeping below the 50km limit to keep the day classified as just a shakedown.

But despite his limited experience today, he has said he is already relishing the prospect of proving what he can do in an F1 car.

"It was an awesome experience," Hamilton told autosport.com about his few laps today. "I just cannot stop smiling.

"It didn't feel that fast compared to a GP2 car, but the way it turns in is amazing. It is a shame that I have not been able to do more laps today, but I've got two full days of running to look forward to."

Hamilton will test alongside Pedro de la Rosa for the next two days at Silverstone, before returning to action at the Jerez test, which takes place the week following the Japanese Grand Prix.

McLaren have said that they are likely to make a decision about who will be Fernando Alonso's teammate before Christmas.
