Grapevine: Surtees, Priaulx get Queen's Honours
Former Formula One and motorcycle world champion John Surtees and triple World Touring Car champion Andy Priaulx have received an OBE and an MBE respectively in the Queen's Birthday Honours List
Surtees, who claimed seven motorcycling titles before switching to car racing and winning the 1964 F1 crown, has been granted the OBE both for his sporting achievements and his services to charity.
Priaulx has earned a streak of four consecutive touring car titles - winning the 2004 European championship before the series was granted World Championship status, allowing him to take the world title for the following three seasons. He said the MBE was totally unexpected.
"It is quite a surprise to receive an envelope with the royal logo on," Priaulx said. "I was really taken aback and very honoured to read they wanted to bestow the MBE on me.
"I love my racing and am proud to carry the flags of both Guernsey and the UK on my car and overalls, so recognition of this sort is something really special. This honour is something I shall share with my family, whose support has made it possible for me to concentrate 100 per cent on my chosen sport."
