Grapevine: Albers Chasing Jordan Test Drive

Dutchman Christijan Albers confirmed today that he is interested in lining up a test drive with the Jordan Grand Prix team - but insisted he will not join the British-based outfit if it conflicts with his Mercedes DTM deal.

Dutchman Christijan Albers confirmed today that he is interested in lining up a test drive with the Jordan Grand Prix team - but insisted he will not join the British-based outfit if it conflicts with his Mercedes DTM deal.

Albers, who was close to securing a race seat with Minardi earlier this year, will race in the German Touring Car championship this season to continue his long-term association with manufacturers Mercedes.

But he admitted that, although his dream is Formula One, he must consult with Mercedes before making an effort to chase a test driver role with Jordan because they may not want to make him available.

"We are always speaking with teams," said Albers. "I think that if it is possible to have a Formula One test role whilst still doing the DTM I would be interested - but I have to discuss this with Mercedes first. I would be interested in any Formula One team and that is what I want to do.

"But I can always come back to Mercedes - I have a great relationship with them and I want to keep that going. I would only be available if Mercedes agreed to it, but we only have ten race weekends a year so there is plenty of time. It would be good to combine the two roles."

Albers is understood to have developed a significant sponsorship budget during his efforts to land the Minardi drive. But he admitted the backing has reduced now he is chasing a test role - and it may not be enough to land the deal.

"A test role is always different for sponsors," he admitted. "We have to see what backers we can get on the table and which deals we have the potential of getting. Maybe we will get nothing or maybe we will get a test deal."

Italy's Giorgio Pantano is also in the frame to become Jordan's test driver after an agreement with the Super Nova Formula 3000 team. Super Nova, the most successful team in F3000 history, were announced as Jordan's official junior team on Monday and team boss David Sears said the initiative would allow a crossover of sponsors and drivers.

"It is hopeful that perhaps Giorgio Pantano, who missed out on a Champ Car opportunity recently, could be a possibility as a test driver for Jordan Ford Formula One and as a race driver with Jordan Grand Prix Junior Team," said Sears.

Jordan said earlier this month that the team could wait until the first European race of the season in April before appointing a test and reserve driver.
