GP betting: Put it Montrea-all on red!
The casino on the Ile de Notre Dame won't be the only focus for the hardened gambler's attention in Montreal this weekend, when the Grand Prix circus rolls into town for eighth round in the Formula 1 World Championship
The bookies have made Ferrari's Michael Schumacher the favourite to take the spoils in Montreal this weekend. But the smart money could be going elsewhere...
British bookmaker Ladbrokes has priced Schumacher 11-10 to come out on top in qualifying on Saturday and he's 5-4 to wrap up the 10 points on Sunday. His closest rival in the championship, McLaren's David Coulthard, is 11-4 to take pole and 9-4 to win the race.
However, punters wanting to know the inside line could do well to pick up on who the reigning world champion sees as his major threat this weekend.
Before flying out to Canada, the Ferrari driver said that his younger brother Ralf would be the one to watch in Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix. With the power of the BMW engine and Michelin widely tipped to be a strong tyre on the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit, having a punt on the Williams cars could provide lucrative returns.
Schumacher Jr is 7-1 to take pole on Saturday and a tempting 8-1 to win Sunday's race, while his Colombian team mate Juan Pablo Montoya is a little further back on 12-1 and 9-1.
Elsewhere, local hero Jacques Villeneuve has not had the best of luck on the track named after his father, failing to finish three out of the five times he has raced here. But after collecting a fourth place in Monaco a fortnight ago, the Canadian might just go one better in Montreal on Sunday - and 18-1 to pick up a podium seems good value. And the man who Villeneuve was chasing hard for third place two weeks ago, Eddie Irvine, is 5-1 to get into the points for Jaguar - a nice little side bet perhaps...
