Gene Re-Signs as Williams Test Driver

Spaniard Marc Gene has extended his test driver deal with the Williams Formula One team, the Grove-based squad announced today in Barcelona.

Spaniard Marc Gene has extended his test driver deal with the Williams Formula One team, the Grove-based squad announced today in Barcelona.

28-year old Gene joined Williams at the end of the 2000 after losing his race seat at Minardi and has since been working with the British squad. The Catalan driver, who had scored Minardi's last point until Mark Webber finished fifth in this year's Australian Grand Prix, will also be Williams's reserve driver.

"I am delighted to have Marc working with us for another season," said team boss Frank Williams. "He is a tireless worker who is well attuned with the way we operate. The job that he has done so far for our team has contributed significantly to our performance on track and Marc's continued support will be necessary if we are to fulfill our aspirations to return to a winning position."

Gene, who is testing at the Barcelona circuit this week, was also pleased with the deal.

"To be with such a professional and successful team in F1 is not an easy task," said the Spaniard. "This season has been very intense and I have done more than 18,000 kilometers, an unattainable number in another team not even being official driver.

"This shows the confidence that the team has in me. Personally I feel very integrated. I know all the mechanics, engineers and know exactly how we all work. My relationship with the three pillars of the team is excellent, as much with Michelin, as with BMW and Williams".
