Gene hails new Michelin wets

Williams test driver Marc Gene believes Michelin has made a huge step forward with its latest wet weather tyre and is hopeful that the improved rubber will allow his team to up its challenge to Ferrari this season

Heavy rain at last week's Jerez test meant Gene was able to concentrate on running the French company's new wet tyre and the results were impressive.

"Rain made it possible to test the tyres on the wet and we observed that the compound of Michelin has greatly improved. This allows us to get closer to Ferrari," Gene said.

The Spaniard also put some more miles on BMW's 2003 P82 engine and although he didn't trouble the head of the timesheets, he was pleased with the number of miles he racked up around the former GP venue.

"During four days of testing, we haven't had any problems and we are pleased to have such a reliable engine. We used four different engines, racing many kilometres. Everything went very well."

Williams will unveil its latest car, the FW25, on January 31.
