Future Weighs on Webber's Mind

Jaguar's Mark Webber has a big decision to make about his Formula One future and it is starting to weigh on the Australian's mind.

Jaguar's Mark Webber has a big decision to make about his Formula One future and it is starting to weigh on the Australian's mind.

Webber, in only his third full season, is considered to be top of Williams' shopping list as a replacement for Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya with Toyota and Renault also seen as possible options.

On top of that, the 27-year-old is contracted to Jaguar until the end of next year depending on performance-related clauses.

"At this stage I've achieved not a great deal in Formula One at all, I've been doing okay and I need to go to that next level," he said at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he set the 15th fastest time in Friday's second free practice.

"Where that is we don't know. I definitely have a decision to make, yes. The decision will be in my hands," added Webber. "I haven't really made the decision. I think about it nearly every day.

"I did worry that it is (becoming a distraction) but every time I get in the car I realise on Sunday night that I didn't actually think about if from Friday through to there. I just get into my little world there with my engineers and my car and do the job at each venue."

The Australian is managed by Renault boss Flavio Briatore and while it is assumed that Webber will move, it is not certain.

Jaguar want to keep him and Webber has a strong loyalty to the team that showed confidence in him while he was a rookie at struggling Minardi. Should Jaguar show a marked improvement in performance and signs that they could become more of a contender, then Webber might find himself staying.

"They (Jaguar) can do a very good job," he said. "BAR have had a phenomenal amount of progress and input from the engine company but still the car is a sound beast. It is possible to go maybe not as far as that but to have a season which is very different to the one we are having this year."
