Jenson Button topped the times in Friday's second practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix to prove his BAR-Honda team could just challenge World Champions Ferrari this weekend.
Briton Button set a time of 1:15.935 as he led a BAR one-two with compatriot test driver Anthony Davidson 0.253 seconds behind after a session run in sunshine and rain saw World Champion Michael Schumacher finish down in seventh.
Brazilian Ricardo Zonta was third for Toyota with German Ralf Schumacher fourth in his Williams-BMW and local hero Fernando Alonso an encouraging fifth fastest for Renault, 0.599 seconds off Button's pace.
Brazilian Rubens Barrichello led Ferrari teammate Schumacher in sixth place with Italian Jarno Trulli eighth, Finn Kimi Raikkonen ninth and Brazilian Cristiano da Matta tenth in the second Toyota.
Christian Klien missed most of the session after he spun into the gravel just three minutes after the start when he lost control of his Jaguar at the Wurth corner half way through the lap.
Trulli also left the track in his Renault but he was able to recover to finish strongly after making only a minor mistake at turn one 20 minutes through the session.
Michael Schumacher had led the session early on, with Barrichello moving up to second, but Davidson and Button then moved to the top of the times before Alonso split them to slot into second.
Rain began to fall 38 minutes into the session and the track was declared wet as umbrellas were put up around the circuit. The shower proved to be brief, and Ralf Schumacher soon pushed Alonso down to third.
Button then moved to the top of the times as BAR's good times continued while, for rivals McLaren-Mercedes, it was business as usual when Finn Kimi Raikkonen's car rolled to a halt out on the circuit.
