Focus on race form has affected Nico Rosberg's F1 qualifying

Mercedes Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg thinks his improved form in races this season has had a detrimental impact on the qualifying speed he demonstrated last year

In the last 10 races of 2014, Rosberg outqualified team-mate Lewis Hamilton seven times to three - each time starting on pole - but he only managed to win twice.

This season, the qualifying form has been reversed, with Hamilton outqualifiying Rosberg nine times to one.

But despite starting on pole only once, Rosberg has secured three wins so far this year.

When asked to explain his woes in qualifying this term, Rosberg said: "Part of it is that I worked on my racing.

"I wanted to improve that and that's definitely been better so I'm pleased with that.

"Of course that has slightly compromised qualifying, some of it but not most of it is explainable for me.

"I don't understand why it's such a big difference to last year at the moment."

Rosberg trails Hamilton by 21 points in the drivers' standings as Formula 1 pauses for its summer break, with nine race still to go.

The German insists that while his qualifying form is frustrating, it is not getting him down, and his performances in races are most important.

"It's frustrating in the moment, but I'll be firing on all pistons again and ready to attack," he said.

"It's not something that holds me down in any way, it's the way it is.

"As long as my racing is good I can turn around."
