Ferrari president welcomes rule changes

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has welcomed the FIA's decision to change the tyre rules for the 2006 season

The Italian team, dominant in 2004, struggled this season as they failed to cope with the new regulations and they are expected to benefit from a return to tyre changes.

Di Montezemolo, one of the main detractors of the one-tyre rule this season, was happy to see tyre changes returning next year.

"I'm happy about these new regulations," di Montezemolo told Gazzetta dello Sport. "In fact, I feel they should have been decided earlier.

"In particular, I think going back to tyre changes is a step forward for safety. As far as the new qualifying is concerned, I think it can help raise the interest from the spectators, especially the ones at the sides of the track."

Ferrari's new driver Felipe Massa also welcomed the changes.

"I'm happy to go back to tyre changes," added Massa. "This year almost all teams had problem in finishing the weekend with a single set. We were always finishing on the limit and as safety is concerned it wasn't good.

"With more new tyres to use it'll be more fun for us drivers. On the other hand I haven't yet understood 100% how the new qualifying works. But to do some laps with little fuel on board should be more spectacular for everyone."
