Ferrari Drivers Agree: It was a Team Decision

World champion Michael Schumacher conceded that Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello was the true winner of the Austrian Grand Prix at the A1-Ring after the Brazilian obeyed team orders and finished second.

World champion Michael Schumacher conceded that Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello was the true winner of the Austrian Grand Prix at the A1-Ring after the Brazilian obeyed team orders and finished second.

Schumacher said that he was unhappy with Ferrari's decision to allow him to complete a full set of wins on the 17 race tracks used during the season as he passed the slowing Barrichello on the final straight.

But the German admitted that the move had come as a surprise so early in the season because he already has a significant lead in the standings.

"It was a team decision," said Schumacher. "Last year the Championship was a lot closer and this year I have a bit of a gap, but suddenly I was told of the decision. I am not happy about winning but I must thank Rubens and his gesture shows the belief we have in each other."

Schumacher crossed the line first amid a chorus of boos and jeers and was left to console a tearful Barrichello and give the Brazilian the winner's trophy on the podium. Barrichello dominated the race but was told by Ferrari boss Jean Todt to pull over at the last minute to let Schumacher through as Grand Prix racing hit a new low.

"It was something that I have been asked to do. It is a team decision and I have just signed a two-year contract with Ferrari," Barrichello said. "I am becoming a better driver and a better person and so there is no point arguing. The car was fantastic and the result was decided by the team."
