Felipe Massa only interested in top Formula 1 seat for 2014

Felipe Massa says he is not interested in being on the Formula 1 grid just to make up the numbers, insisting he wants a competitive car next year

Massa was left without a seat for 2014 after Ferrari confirmed Kimi Raikkonen would replace him alongside Fernando Alonso.

The Brazilian driver is now in talks with other teams to try to find a racing seat that keeps him on the grid.

AUTOSPORT understands Massa has significant backing behind him that could help him secure a leading drive, which he admits is his only desire.

"We are talking with some teams and I'm hoping we find the best direction for me," said Massa.

"I want to find a good car. I'm not interested in being in Formula 1 just to be there on the grid. I want to be there to have a good opportunity, to fight for a good result.

"I want to have the best opportunity to fight for victory and to fight for the championship. And that's what I'm looking for and hopefully we can find it. I have a lot to give."

Where now for Massa?

Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali admitted it was not easy to dump Massa after so many years, the Italian praising the Brazilian's attitude when he heard the news.

"It was very difficult, also from an emotional point of view," he said. "I've known Felipe since he was in shorts. He was 19.

"I grew up with him, and I learned something from him in this situation. The way that he accepted this situation, with the serenity that he showed, it's something that it's not so common."
