F1 bosses head for crunch FIA meeting

The shape of Formula 1 could be altered at a summit between the president of the sport's governing body, Max Mosley, and the team bosses at Heathrow Airport tomorrow (Wednesday)

Top of the agenda will be limiting the costs of the sport and a possible ban on traction control. FIA boss Mosley has indicated that he wants Formula 1 to be more affordable to contest to avoid the risk of the smaller teams going out of business. He also wants to improve 'the show' by placing the onus on driver skill, rather than electronic aids.

Teams are expected to accept some, but not all, of his proposals. Although Mosley has already spoken to them on this subject individually, they are likely to barter with him over any major changes.

Minardi boss Paul Stoddart said: "I am hoping that Max is going to give it a bit of a shake-up, because we all need some help in pulling costs down. Although towards the end of last year there was a consensus to do something and I am sure they will over the period of time, but I believe Max wants to see some changes early. I cannot wait for Wednesday because whatever changes are made it is going to help the smaller teams."

Toyota's team principal Ove Andersson said: "In my opinion there needs to be a change to the rules to make the sport more interesting. If this happens through rule changes, I will be very happy."

At the BAR launch today, team boss David Richards stated that he was in favour of banning driver aids.

"This is about the future of Formula 1," he said. "The sport comes first and I will be voting for it."
