Extra tunnel for Williams

Williams is aiming to up the ante in its fight against Ferrari by building a new state-of-the-art windtunnel that could help push it right to the forefront of technology in Formula 1, according to a story in this week's AUTOSPORT

The team has refused to speak openly about the plans, which have been lodged with the local council, but a source has confirmed the tunnel should be functional by 2004.

It is thought the new tunnel will be used as an additional facility for aerodynamic development. This is seen as one of the key areas where the team has lost out to Ferrari.

Williams claims its failure to close the gap on Ferrari at the end of this season is making it more motivated than ever to strike back.

"Looking back through this season, it feels like turning up for a school exam having not done your homework," said chief operations engineer, Sam Michael. "I have had that feeling too many times this year and I'm getting a bit tired of it. We must put that right over the winter."
