DC and Wilson struggle in qualifying

British Formula 1 stars David Coulthard and Justin Wilson had good cause to rue their bad luck today, as they will start tomorrow's German Grand Prix from 10th and 16th positions respectively

Coulthard's day got off to an awful start when he crashed heavily in the stadium section in free practice when a software change caused his McLaren to lock its rear wheels under braking. He was forced to qualify his spare car.

"Until this morning's second free practice session everything was going according to plan and I felt we were making steady progress," said Coulthard. "Unfortunately I went off during the second session following a set-up change, the effects of which we underestimated and had to qualify in the spare car. I was not as comfortable and seemed to be losing out at the low speed sections of the track."

Jaguar newboy Wilson, who qualified seventh yesterday, suffered a poor end to his lap and he lost a great deal of time in the stadium section.

"I just pushed way too hard towards the end of the lap to give my lap time a push," he admitted. "I lost a fair bit of time in the last sector but that's where my inexperience with Jaguar and Michelin comes in.

"The first sector of my lap was okay and then in the second sector I lost a bit of time. Then I came into the Sachs Curve far too hard and went wide on the exit. It's frustrating but I know that the potential of the car is there."
