Davidson says penalty was unfair

Anthony Davidson thinks he was made an example of in the Monaco Grand Prix after being handed a drive-through penalty for ignoring blue flags

Davidson was judged to have impeded Felipe Massa during the middle phase of the race, and his penalty cost him any chance of finishing ahead of teammate Takuma Sato.

But Davidson was adamant that he did not ignore the blue flags - and thinks he was harshly dealt with compared to some other drivers.

"About half way through the race, when I was stuck behind Trulli's Toyota, Massa was slowly catching me up, two tenths of a second a lap, and I was waiting until he got closer to let him by," said Davidson.

"I was going to let him pass when we got a drive-through penalty. He was about two seconds behind me at that time, so I think it's a little bit unfair.

"I've always been good in traffic and I think that other people were being bad about the blue flags out there and maybe they made an example out of me."

Davidson had damaged his nose in a minor first corner collision with Heikki Kovalainen, but the incident made little difference to the performance of his car on a difficult weekend for the team.

With Sato and Davidson finishing 17th and 18th, team boss Aguri Suzuki is hoping for improved fortunes next time out.

"It was not a good weekend for the team," he said. "It is very important to qualify well at this circuit and as we did not have a good session yesterday, it was always going to be a difficult race.

"Both drivers and the team did a very good job today, so I hope that our weekend in Canada is a different story and we can return to performing in higher positions."
