Coulthard: WC Runner-Up Spot Not Important

Briton David Coulthard said on Friday that he would rather score another victory this season than finish as runner-up to Michael Schumacher in the Drivers' Championship.

Briton David Coulthard said on Friday that he would rather score another victory this season than finish as runner-up to Michael Schumacher in the Drivers' Championship.

Coulthard, who was only 12th quickest in Friday's free practice for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, revealed that finishing runner-up in the Championship means nothing to him and said he would much rather taste victory again this year.

"Michael is going to win the Championship and all we can try for is to finish as runner-up," said Coulthard, who ended a 12-month search for victory in Monaco back in May. "I'd love another win and then finish tenth in the Championship.

"I don't car where I finish in the Championship unless I win it but if the car is winning that is all that matters to me.

"I do believe that Ferrari are very difficult to beat in any conditions this year, but I think our Mercedes trucks get our cars to the circuit a little quicker than their Iveco trucks!" he joked.

Coulthard put his disappointing practice form down to the performance of his Michelin tyres in the wet conditions and insisted a dry race would suit his package better.

"We were quite concerned coming here for the wet weather how the Michelins would compare to the Bridgestones because pre-season testing had shown that the Bridgestones had an advantage," he said.

"But although Ferrari are looking strong, the other Bridgestone runners-up don't seem to have made a big step forward and hopefully that will be the case in qualifying if it is wet.

"But I think the dry is a better way for us all to race because we can get the maximum out of the package."
