Button in the hunt for podiums in 2002

Renault Formula 1 driver Jenson Button has set his sights on making amends for a troubled 2001 and hopes to make it onto the podium in his third year of Grand Prix Racing

Button, who switched to Benetton after an impressive debut season with Williams in 2000, scored just two points last year and finished inside the top 10 only four times.

However, while the 21-year-old admits that he badly wants to get his maiden win, he believes podium finishes is where the team, which becomes Renault Sport for 2002, should be aiming.

"It would be nice to get a win, and a proper one, not through people retiring," said Button. "That's the aim, to get podium finishes, and to be competitive with a top team. That's what we are really aiming for, and it would be nice to get the team up a few positions in the constructors' championship. What I want for myself is a win - more than anything."

Button struggled against team mate Giancarlo Fisichella last year and was out-qualified 13 times to four. The young Brit will be under pressure both from new team mate Jarno Trulli and team boss Flavio Briatore in 2002, but he believes his experience from last year will help him to move forward.

"In my first year in Formula 1 I didn't really realise how much effort you have to put in on the driving side and on the technical side," said Button. "But now, I'd say my strength is working as hard as I can with the team. I now know how important that is, and one little problem can cause you one or two tenths in qualifying, which could be three or four positions. The little details are important in Formula 1."

The Renault squad is due to start pre-season testing at Barcelona next week, but initial running will be carried out using last year's B201 as the 2002 machine is not due to be launched until the end of the month.
