Best Day of My Life, Says Alonso

Spaniard Fernando Alonso made a dream come true on Sunday as he confirmed himself as one of the most talented young drivers of the current Formula One field.

Renault driver Alonso, still just 21, became the first Spaniard to score a point in his home race and his stunning drive further enhanced his reputation as a champion in waiting. Alonso chased World Champion Michael Schumacher all the way to the end of the race and finished less than six seconds behind the German in the new Ferrari F2003-GA.

He punched the air in utter jubilation as he crossed the finish for the best result of his fledgling career and third podium of the year before cruising round at the finish to acknowledge the fans.

"To be in front of 96,000 people all waving their flags coming from all parts of Spain...I'll never forget this day," said Alonso, in third place in the drivers' standings only seven points off leader Kimi Raikkonen.

"This is the best day of my life and I feel I am dreaming. It's difficult to describe what I felt on that final lap with all the flags and the crowds cheering for me. It's fantastic to have scored points at all the races so far and I hope to continue so. I am sorry for Jarno, who - I am sure - would have brought home some points as well."

Teammate Jarno Trulli retired from the race after clashing with McLaren's David Coulthard on the first lap.
