Barrichello Shatters Mugello Record

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello shattered the Mugello circuit record on Monday, lapping more than a second quicker that Nick Heidfeld's time, set on Sunday with the Sauber.

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello shattered the Mugello circuit record on Monday, lapping more than a second quicker that Nick Heidfeld's time, set on Sunday with the Sauber.

Barrichello, who also broke the Barcelona record the last time he tested at the Spanish track, concluded his preparations before the first race of the season on March 4.

"This was my last day of testing before the Australian Grand Prix," said Barrichello. "My lap time? I am not surprised, but I am certainly happy with the work we have done so far."

Barrichello set a fastest time of 1:22.139 after 43 laps, almost eight tenths of a second faster than teammate Michael Schumacher, who replaced the Brazilian for the afternoon session after a four-hour break.

The world champion completed 19 laps, with a best time of 1:22.923, and he again admitted he's happy with the new F2001.

"Today's times confirm that the car is very quick," added Schumacher. "Right from the start, I have had a positive feeling about the car and that continues to be the case with every day that passes."

Schumacher will continue working on Tuesday at Mugello.
