Barrichello Flies as Testing Ends at Barcelona

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello was only three tenths of a second away from the record of the Barcelona circuit on the final day of testing at the Spanish track.

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello was only three tenths of a second away from the record of the Barcelona circuit on the final day of testing at the Spanish track.

The Ferrari driver, runner-up in last season's Championship, posted a quickest time of 1:15.917 as the Italian squad continued their preparation work ahead of the 2003 season. Barrichello, who returned to action on Thursday following the end of the season, was more than two tenths of a second faster than the second Ferrari, driven by Italian test driver Luca Badoer.

Badoer, fastest on the first two days of work, continued with his programme of tyre and electronics testing, finishing nearly a second ahead of German Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who was third fastest with the Sauber. Teammate Nick Heidfeld finished at the bottom of the times.

"We had a good positive day today although I finished the program a little bit earlier due to an oil leak which we could not fix immediately," said Heidfeld. "However we have been able to achieve everything that we prepared in the program."

Both teams concentrated on trying different Bridgestone tyre compounds during the three days, and the Japanese company's technical manager Hisao Suganuma was pleased with the progress made.

"The weather has not been kind to us this week although it has not prevented us from doing some valuable work," said Suganuma. "We have done some excellent comparisons of compounds and constructions that have given us some useful information to work with over the next few weeks.

"In particular, the rain at Barcelona on Wednesday was ideal for running a wet tyre programme. The opportunity to test in natural rain conditions is extremely valuable and much better than simply wetting the track to simulate such weather."

Testing will return to Barcelona on January 13.
