Barrichello fastest with Ferrari at Jerez

Rubens Barrichello topped times during pre-season testing for new team Ferrari at Jerez on Monday.

The Brazilian worked mainly on the set-up of the F399 in the morning session.

In the afternoon, Barrichello worked with different settings and tested components.

He completed a total of 105 laps, with a best time of 1.39.182 at the Spanish circuit, which was wet throughout the day.

New Jaguar test driver Luciano Burti was second fastest in a Stewart-Ford. He completed 69 laps with a best time of 1.40.276.

Briton Johnny Herbert was third quickest, putting in 46 laps and a fastest time of 1.40.384.

The Minardi team ran three cars at the test; regular driver Marc Gene was fourth quickest - ahead of Zonta, who was testing his BAR with a Honda engine and new chassis for the first time - with a 1.42.474.

The outfit also ran Italian Formula 3000 champion Georgio Vinella, and 17-year-old Spanish prodigy Fernando Alonso - who won a test in the F1 car after taking this year's Formula Nissan title.

The 1996 world karting champion who has completed his first year of racing cars, was just one second adrift of Gene with a 1.43.474, going sixth fastest.

Barrichello will continue testing for Ferrari on Tuesday.

McLaren drivers David Coulthard, Olivier Panis and new Jaguar racer Eddie Irvine [who will be making his first appearance in the Stewart-Ford] will also take part.
