Barrichello escapes penalty

Rubens Barrichello will keep his third place on the grid for the Chinese Grand Prix after the race stewards decided that no action was necessary over his alleged blocking of Pedro de la Rosa in qualifying

McLaren had complained that Barrichello had held up de la Rosa during the third session of qualifying after emerging into his path at the exit of the pitlane. FIA race director Charlie Whiting subsequently asked the race stewards to look into the matter.

After summoning Barrichello and de la Rosa, and looking at video evidence, the stewards deemed that there was no evidence of the Honda Racing driver deliberately holding up his rival.

And they cited the lack of blue warning lights and flags as a factor in what happened.

A stewards report said: "Having heard the explanation of both the Competitors representatives and the drivers, the Stewards determine that the incident requires no further action as enquiries show that as a result of a system fault, the blue lights at pit exit were not illuminated to indicate the presence of a car on the pit straight, nor was the blue flag waved at the pit exit."
