Barcelona day 2: Coulthard happy

David Coulthard declared himself satisfied with his new McLaren MP4-17 after the second day of Formula 1 testing at Barcelona, despite finishing second to team mate and test driver Alex Wurz who was driving last year's car

Coulthard completed 63 laps in his 2002 machine, but finished exactly one second behind the Austrian's benchmark time of 1m18.194s. Despite the fact that the Scot did not make it out onto the track until noon due to the mechanics changing a component, he was pleased with his day's work.

"It was exactly as we expected," said Coulthard. "I did some long runs and I'm quite happy with what I've found out so far. The lap times are getting better. I'm going back to the old car tomorrow (Wednesday)."

Wurz managed 98 tours of the Circuit de Catalunya, but was forced to sit out in the middle of the day while a new Mercedes V10 was fitted after a spectacular blow-up out on the circuit.

Nick Heidfeld continued to show the potential of his new Sauber C20, which was third quickest. The German's best effort was just 0.096s shy of Coulthard's time.

"So far we've had no technical problems, so I'm very happy," said Heidfeld. "We made some adjustments to the car that worked really well. There was a little bit more to come."
