BAR wing plan is scuppered
Autosport magazine has learned that the sport's governing body, the FIA, has scuppered BAR's plan to introduce a radical rear wing, which the Brackley-based Formula 1 team felt could have given it a timely boost as it takes the fight to Ferrari this year
High level sources have revealed that the FIA was consulted about the plans for a unique rear wing, that would effectively have given the team a third element and a marked increase in downforce levels over its opposition.
The FIA has ruled, however, that it did not believe the wing - the details of which are outlined in this week's Autosport magazine - was legal. The development of the radical aero component has now been shelved.
Meantime, BAR will introduce minor aerodynamic revisions in time for the San Marino Grand Prix later this month. Lead driver Jenson Button is third in the world championship after his second successive podium finish in Bahrain at the weekend.
"The car will not look very different, but we do have an aero package and an engine upgrade," said BAR technical director Geoff Willis. "It is a nice step."
