The Renault team endured a torrid day in Friday's practice for the Canadian Grand Prix, with both their drivers being hampered by mechanical problems that cut their running short.
Italian Jarno Trulli had a troubled day and was unable to run in the afternoon session following a mechanical problem with his Michelin-shod R202. Trulli managed to complete 19 laps, finishing the day in 21st position, only ahead of Minardi's Alex Yoong.
"A very poor day, at a time when it is important for us to do our homework for Sunday," said Pat Symonds, Renault's head of engineering, after the session. "It is extremely disappointing to have lost half the day with technical problems on both cars.
"Overall, our level of competitiveness does not look good, as we must assume that our competitors were running with the same fuel loads as us. We have a lot of work to do tonight to rectify the situation."
Briton Jenson Button was 15th quickest after his car suffered an engine problem in the first session.
