Zanardi Speaks Out after Accident

Italian driver Alex Zanardi has spoken to the press for the first time since his horrific accident in Germany more than two weeks ago, when he lost both his legs when Alex Tagliani crashed into his car at more than 300 km/h.

Italian driver Alex Zanardi has spoken to the press for the first time since his horrific accident in Germany more than two weeks ago, when he lost both his legs when Alex Tagliani crashed into his car at more than 300 km/h.

The former two-time CART champion and Grand Prix driver has undergone several operations in order to clean up his wounds, and though the recovery process is going to be long according to the doctors, 34-year old Zanardi said he is trying to be positive.

"I've just come back from another operation to clean up my wounds and apart from some pain I'm fine," Zanardi told Autosprint. "By now I've been able to take in what has happened. I'm trying to get through this in the most positive way possible. I don't think about what I lost, but everything I've still got, which I've realised is a great deal."

The Italian driver lost control of his car while exiting the pits, stopping on the racing line, and Tagliani could do nothing to avoid the accident which destroyed Zanardi's car. The former Williams driver admitted he doesn't remember the incident.

"I can't remember anything about the accident. I remember leaving for Germany and then the rest is just an absolute blank. I've seen some newspaper reports of the accident and some photos, but I didn't feel up to watching a video of what happened."

The cheerful Italian, who has a three-year old daughter with his wife Daniela, knows that recovering from the accident will not be an easy task, but he is ready to enjoy his new life and leave the past behind him.

"There have been difficult moments and I know there will be more in the future, but with every day that goes by things are getting better," he added. "Even my legs â€" what's left of them; hour by hour I'm learning to control my movements better.

"I want to - and I must - think positively. I can't allow myself to think back to what happened. I've got a new life ahead of me and now I want to use all my energy to make the most of it."
