Jarno Trulli Q&A

Jarno Trulli has endured a difficult second season with Jordan, and while he has often shown great pace in qualifying, he has rarely had much luck in the races. Poor reliability and his uncanny knack of getting caught up in collisions have restricted him to one of the worst finishing records in the field. It all came right at Indianapolis, or so it seemed, when he finished a fine fourth on the road. But he was subsequently excluded for a skidplate infringement, a decision that Jordan has appealed against. Adam Cooper spoke to Trulli at Indianapolis - just before the Italian received the bad news from the FIA

"Very well, to be honest. I didn't really have a major problem with the car, but the gearbox was a little harsh on downshifting, but I've got used to that now, and I know how to manage it. Apart from that, I must say the car was pretty well balanced. We had quite a lot of problems with the tyres in the first stint, and I had to stop with big blistering on my rear left, but apart from that I must say I was keeping a good pace and my lap times were good, so I'm happy."

"I'm pleased. It was a good race for us. It was important to score some points for us, and we are fifth in the championship now, just behind Sauber, and we can still get them, so we will try really hard [in fact the team has now slipped to sixth behind BAR]."

"Yeah, but I didn't realise it, until I came back to the pit and they told me after the race. I only saw one Sauber catching me up, and then suddenly I saw another Sauber, and I couldn't understand what happened. Apparently the two Saubers hit each other. They didn't hit me at all."

"Yes, I saw that, but I didn't realise what was happening."

"It might be a good race for us, because it's medium and high speed corners, where our car normally performs well. I'm confident that we can do a good job. We've got a step [forward] with the engine, and this may help us."

"Yes, Bridgestone and Honda, so we really hope we can do well in the championship."

"Not so emotional, because I'm young, so maybe one day I will have time to come back to Jordan and rejoin this team. I've had two great seasons with them, and you can see it's still a very good atmosphere around me. I'm looking forward for another experience at Renault. On the other hand both me and Jordan deserve good results, but that's life."

"You're right! I decided it in Monza, but I didn't tell anyone. I was doing something for the USA, and doing something for these people who were really warm last year and again this season, despite the tragedy they had and the problems they had. I wanted to show them our sympathy."

"The one I raced with I gave it to Tony George, who is giving it to Rudolph Giuliani, who is organising an auction for the tragedy. But what we all did as GPDA members was give some overalls and stuff for charity, and I also did that."
