Minardi 'Ecstatic' with Promising Start
Minardi boss Paul Stoddart was delighted with the performance of his team in first qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, but he admitted the result was overshadowed by political issues.
Minardi boss Paul Stoddart was delighted with the performance of his team in first qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, but he admitted the result was overshadowed by political issues.
"We're obviously ecstatic about today's performance, although sadly, it has come on a weekend that has so far been somewhat overshadowed by Formula One politics," said Stoddart, who was involved in a war of words with McLaren boss Ron Dennis over Formula One's proposed "Fighting Fund".
Dutchman Jos Verstappen was the quickest of the Minardi duo, posting a promising 11th quickest time in the wet first qualifying session. Teammate Justin Wilson completed Minardi's good day by finishing in 13th position in the second of the Cosworth-powered cars.
"In the equalised conditions created by the rain, where all the Bridgestone teams are on the same tyres and the Michelin teams likewise, Minardi's true potential was able to show through," added Stoddart.
"I must particularly thank Bridgestone for the fantastic wet tyres they provided us with today."
