Alonso: Win won't affect future decision

Fernando Alonso says his victory at the Singapore Grand Prix will not affect the decision about his future

The two-time champion is yet to reveal his plans for next year, with Renault, Honda and BMW Sauber still hoping to secure his services.

Alonso, who had not finished on the podium this year until the Singapore race, has made it clear he would like to be in a winning car in 2009.

But despite winning with Renault on Sunday, the Spaniard insisted he has not made up his mind yet.

"No, I didn't say that," said Alonso when asked if he would stay at Renault. "I just want to say thanks to the team because they keep working with this car. We had a new front wing at this race. They are working on next year's car, they didn't forget the performance of this year.

"So this victory is thanks to this massive effort they are doing with this year's car.

"It doesn't change my decision for next year. But as I have always said Renault will be my first priority because I feel at home in this team."

Alonso, who had last won a year ago for McLaren, said he was aware the Singapore circuit was not a good indicator of how strong the teams are, although he did praise Renault's progress since the start of the year.

"We hope it is the turning point but we will find out very quickly in Fuji," he said. "We cannot forget this is a special track, a street circuit like Monaco, corner after corner for second and third gear. It is more about set-up and how risky the laps are.

"We started the season quite far away from pole position and from the top teams and now we are much closer. We are one of the teams that has improved most in the car. Maybe it is not difficult because we were not at the right level."

The two-time champion, who had started from 15th position after he had mechanical problems in qualifying, admitted his race would have been very different if not for the first safety car period.

"Without the safety car maybe I would have finished in the same position, 15th or 14th. We knew one stop was a bit better for us. Our simulator said it could work better, but there was no choice as the brakes were running hotter here."
