Alonso Hopes to Race for Renault in 2003

Renault test driver Fernando Alonso said on Saturday that he has not discussed his role for 2003 with Flavio Briatore despite speculation claiming he will replace Jenson Button.

Renault test driver Fernando Alonso said on Saturday that he has not discussed his role for 2003 with Flavio Briatore despite speculation claiming he will replace Jenson Button.

Button has been in talks with other teams with his two-year contract ending this year and according to reports Spaniard Alonso is to replace him as teammate to Jarno Trulli.

But 21-year old Alonso said in the Nurburgring paddock on Saturday that he has not been told of Briatore's plans for next year but did admit that he is keen to return to Grand Prix racing.

"I don't know, it is maybe a little too early to have an answer," Alonso said. "We are working on it and Flavio is working on that as well and I hope to be racing next year.

"Last year I had some good opportunities to race but Flavio said no, you have to be in the team to know the car for 2003 to be driving. Next year is 2003 and I hope to be driving here."

Button held talks with Jaguar earlier this week, while Alonso tested for the Milton Keynes-based team in a one-off outing. Mark Webber, who is also contracted to Briatore, will also test for Jaguar next week.

But unlike Webber, who could land a seat with the Jaguar team next season, Alonso insisted his only destination is likely to be a race seat at Renault.

"The test for Jaguar was only a favour that Flavio did for Niki but nothing more for next year or to do with next year," Alonso added.

"There are some other teams and also last year I had some opportunities - like I said before I had four or five teams - but now I am only really thinking about racing here at Renault."
