Grapevine: Rankings: Webber, Hamilton fall back
A dramatic weekend in the Castrol EDGE Rankings ended with significant changes among the Formula 1 aces at the top of the table and enormous leaps and falls further down among those competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours
The Canadian Grand Prix culminated in Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton falling one place each to third and fifth respectively in the Rankings. Webber was dropping his third place and pole position from last year's Turkish GP under the 12-month rollover system, with Hamilton discarding his win from the same race.
Webber took third in Canada but qualified only fourth, meaning he now loses second place to World Rally Championship leader Sebastien Loeb.
Meanwhile, Hamilton's early exit after a brief-but-incident-filled race means that he has dropped behind Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who also crashed out but had a smaller score to drop from Turkey 2010.
Up front, Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel continues to stretch his advantage, despite losing the lead of the Canadian GP on the final lap to Jenson Button. Vettel had a non-finish from Turkey 2010 to drop, so he has made a big net gain in points, while moving ever-further clear in the EDGE Race for 2011.
Button's win came at the same time as dropping second from last year's Turkish race, so he consolidates seventh place behind IndyCar star Will Power, who took a win at Texas Motor Speedway. Dario Franchitti was the other winner in Texas and he remains eighth.
NASCAR was in action at Pocono, with Carl Edwards the highest-placed in the Rankings. He had engine problems but keeps ninth in the Rankings, while race winner Jeff Gordon rises four to 22nd.
Le Mans featured the dramatic moves, with Audi's race winners Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler rising to 79th, 99th and 170th respectively. Simultaneously, Mike Rockenfeller's enormous shunt means he and fellow 2010 Audi victors Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas drop to 52nd, 163rd and 171st respectively. Rockenfeller was also overtaken by Simon Pagenaud, who now becomes the top Le Mans 24 Hours competitor in the Castrol EDGE Rankings. He took second place with Pedro Lamy and Sebastien Bourdais and has moved up six places to 44th as a result.
