Kovalainen vows no button error repeat

Heikki Kovalainen has promised not to make the same mistake that cost him fourth place in the Australian Grand Prix again

The McLaren driver had pulled a brilliant manoeuvre to move ahead of Renault's Fernando Alonso on the penultimate lap, but he hit the speed limiter button by mistake at the start of the pit straight and the Spaniard managed to move ahead.

McLaren said they would make changes to the button in order to avoid a repeat.

"We haven't made any physical changes but we are looking at modifying so I won't be able to hit it at high speed so it won't activate," Kovalainen told reporters.

"We can do that otherwise it's difficult to change it between the two races because we won't be able to test it and make it reliable. Anyway, I won't hit it again."

He went on: "I took my hand away from the wheel to take my tear-off off and with my knuckles, the button sits out quite a lot from the wheel and just hit it and it switched on.

"I lost the driver and the power in the car and my reaction was somehow to hit the limiter again - I just somehow thought that was the problem. I hit it again and the car started going again."

Kovalainen said there was no point in thinking about the lost chance and admitted he had already put the disappointment behind.

"There's nothing we can do about it any more and it's better not to think about it too much. It didn't happen for me that weekend but we had a good weekend otherwise with steady improvements through the weekend. We were on the pace and it was no problem: we'll do it again this weekend."
