Grapevine: Another setback for Mansell's plans
Nigel Mansell's plans to transform his Dunkeswell karting track hit another snag when planning officers' recommended against the facilities
Former world champion Mansell is hoping to transform his track, and applied to build a 30,000 square feet racing venue which would incorporate a restaurant, two residential units and Formula Three and Formula BMW workshops.
Mansell's application stirred controversy in the Devon area, with residents having started the Cancel Mansell campaign, which aims to spoil the former world champion's plans.
The protesters received good news this week, as the planning officers recommended refusal because they believe the scale of the facilities would have a detrimental impact on the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
"The adverse effect of the large building and the race tower in the landscape of the AONB are judged to be sufficiently significant to warrant refusal," the planning officer's report read according to local media.
"There is no overriding reason for the development to be in this location rather than any other. The buildings have the potential to be intrusive, are of an unsuitable scale and design and have not responded sensitively to their location."
