Renault to focus on drivers' title first

Renault team boss Flavio Briatore has said the French squad will focus on helping Fernando Alonso win the drivers' championship before they concentrate on the constructors' crown

Alonso boosted his chances of a second consecutive title with a superb drive in the Turkish Grand Prix, where he finished in second place after holding off the attacks of a faster Michael Schumacher during the last 15 laps of the event.

The result allowed Alonso to increase his lead over Schumacher to 12 points with four races remaining. Ferrari, however, moved to just two points behind Renault in the standings following Felipe Massa's victory.

Briatore said Alonso's result felt like a win, and the Italian has suggested Renault will make the drivers' title their first priority for now.

"Two points are like a victory," Briatore told Gazzetta dello Sport. "Fernando has re-opened the championship. We were worried about this race: I must thank Alonso, the team, and Fisichella's work.

"For now we're concentrating on the drivers' title, while we'll think about the constructors' later.

"At Monza we'll have an engine development and new tyres: we're back on the attack."
