Wurz quickest in practice 1 - Europe

Williams test driver Alex Wurz set the fastest time in the opening practice session for this weekend's European Grand Prix

Austrian Wurz topped the times in 1:32.079 to beat Honda's British test driver Anthony Davidson by just over three tenths of a second.

Behind them, BMW Sauber's Polish test driver Robert Kubica was third with Ferrari's seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher the fastest race driver in fourth at his home circuit.

Davidson was the first driver to complete a flying lap, but a dirty track surface meant that he struggled to dip under the one minute 35-second barrier until 15 minutes had elapsed.

But he, Wurz and Red Bull's Dutch test driver Robert Doornbos sent the times tumbling as the session drew on before former Benetton and McLaren driver Wurz set the benchmark time.

Frenchman Franck Montagny, who is making his race debut this weekend, took just one lap to make his first mistake.

Montagny, who has replaced Japanese Yuji Ide at Super Aguri, locked up his right-front wheel and slid into the gravel at the tight first hairpin.

He continued without damage on his way to setting the 16th fastest time.

Toro Rosso's test driver Neel Jani also had an off. He slid wide over the kerbs at turn 10 but continued without damage.

The top race drivers again failed to produce much action on-track. World champion Fernando Alonso and his Renault teammate Giancarlo Fisichella both completed only one installation lap.

Neither the Williams or BMW Sauber race drivers, Ferrari's Felipe Massa or Toro Rosso's Vitantonio Liuzzi left the pit garages.
