Briatore would welcome qualifying change

Amid growing dissatisfaction with the third session of the new knockout format, especially where drivers spend the early part of it running around burning off fuel, moves are now being made to make changes as soon as possible.

The Grand Prix Drivers' Association are due to hold a meeting with F1 team managers at the Spanish Grand Prix next weekend to discuss their proposals for modifying the session.

And although there have been some suggestions that the teams want the session to become low fuel, with race fuel allocations nominated before the start, there are also some factions who want the cars to continue running with race fuel.

Any change to take place this season will need unanimous support from the teams.

Speaking to autosport.com, Briatore welcomed the move by the GPDA to get involved in the discussions and hoped that a single-lap shoot-out on race fuel would decide the top ten grid positions.

"Great," he said when asked about his reaction to the drivers' involvement. "We need to change Q3. It is not good for the environment, it is polluting. I would like Q3 to be one-by-one with race fuel."

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone told Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday that a change could take place as soon as the next race in Spain if there was agreement between the teams.

"We can have these ten drivers get on track one at a time for a single flying lap like last year," he said. "If all the teams agree, it can be done from the next GP already."
