Pre-qual: Williams 1-2
Last year's Canadian Grand Prix poleman Ralf Schumacher led a Williams 1-2 in pre-qualifying at Montreal, despite a troubled build-up to the qualifying session
Following his early European Grand Prix exit, Schumacher was one of the last runners to set a time (1m12.441s) to arrange the order for the qualifying session proper. He will now go last in that as a result.
His brother Michael was first on track, but his 1m13.463s effort was only good enough for eighth. Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello, meanwhile, was back in 11th after his switch to the spare car due to damaging his racecar in practice this morning.
Juan Pablo Montoya made it a Williams 1-2 with a time of 1m13.746s, enough to oust Renault's Fernando Alonso from the top spot at the time. Takuma Sato (BAR) was fourth fastest, despite setting a very swift first sector time. Jarno Trulli was next up for Renault, ahead of David Coulthard (McLaren), Jenson Button (BAR) and Schumacher.
Gianmaria Bruni's Minardi broke down as it left the pits, so his participation in qualifying is in doubt.
